Functional and Brain Training Programming for Senior Fitness Boutiques

Functional and Brain Training Programming for Senior Fitness Boutiques

SMARTfit® has designed a range of functional and brain training programming which can fit naturally into senior fitness classes, gyms and workout studios designed for active aging programs, and health clubs for older adults.

SMARTfit’s unique combination of enjoyable gamified programming incorporates safe and ability-scaled physical activities, cognitive stimulation and social engagement. This provides a perfect foundation for any boomer and senior brain and body fitness program. A literature review uncovered 22 studies that looked at the effects of game play by older adults. Analysis showed that playing the games had positive effects, including improving physical function, decreasing depression, and increasing cognition and quality of life. Some older adults reported improvements in socializing and willingness to exercise. This is where SMARTfit® excells.

Using Specialized Training Activities
in Senior Fitness Classes

Many senior fitness programs and trainers engage in a range of aerobics, cardio and strength based activities, but cognitive-physical activity is a missing component. Cognitive physical cross-training creates a multisensory stimulation experience which builds new neural pathways in users. The result of this pathway building is a variety of personal wellness benefits including improved cognitive skills, memory, auditory / visual processing, and reaction time. Activities which produce specific cognitive benefits are an important aspect of a well rounded active senior lifestyle.

The benefits of cognitive physical cross-training have been heavily researched and well documented. While users at any age and in many different scenarios can achieve tangible benefits from combined cognitive-physical activities, the concept is particularly well-suited to active aging environments.

Important goals of active aging lifestyles involve maintaining physical fitness as well as cognitive fortitude and ability. While conventional senior fitness classes can be effective physical fitness activities, they don’t specifically address the need to continuously activate and challenge the brain the way SmartFit gameplay does.

As users move, touch, and physically interact with the console, a region of the brain corresponding to that physical activity is stimulated. Simultaneously, as users exert mental energy to follow patterns, identify symbols, or calculate quick formulas, a separate region of the brain corresponding to that mental activity is stimulated. When two separate brain regions are stimulated simultaneously, neural pathways are built connecting the separate regions of the brain. This neural pathway building is the source of a variety of tangible personal wellness benefits.

How SMARTfit® Works
in Active Aging Environments

SMARTfit® consoles are impact based devices in which users engage in high-level gameplay requiring upper and lower body movement, number, word, symbol, and pattern games which create a focused multisensory experience. This unique workflow is distinctly different than conventional aerobic and cardio focused senior fitness routines. SmartFit trainers can be setup for group and competitive modes so that they fit naturally into group based classes and health club environments.

Application Companion

SMARTfit® is a workout console with an integrated CPU which allows users to configure a comprehensive collection of games, drills, and training modes to fit a variety of clinical scenarios. Custom lesson plans can be designed which allows clinicians to create their own nuanced approach to therapy, rehab, or coordinated healthcare, and engage patients in varying levels of cognitive intensity from mild to aggressive. Users can control the CPU from a remote application that is compatible with iOS and Android devices allowing users to develop their own personal workflow.

Beth Fisher
“Everything in Parkinson’s research points to the need for combining cognitive challenges with physical activities- I cannot think of a better way to do that than with SMARTfit.”
Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy Director, Neuroplasticity and Imaging Laboratory Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy University of Southern California
Christopher Powers
“SMARTfit takes the focus of the player off the mechanics and moves it to the external, forcing the brain to solve two problems at the same time. It solves the big missing part in rehab because we want carry-over onto the field. SMARTfit is a great tool to test if that is happening. Further studies will help us to measure its full effectiveness.”
USC Professor
Director, Biokinesiology Program
Co-Director, Biomechanics Research Lab
Charles Y. Liu
“I am extremely intrigued and optimistic that SMARTfit will prove to be an exceptionally effective and important tool that combines cognitive and motor training in unique and endless combinations to address a multitude of indications within the athletic and medical realms.”
Professor, Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Biomedical Engineering USC Director, USC Neurorestoration Center
Charles Flowers
“I have been using SMARTfit on patients who have post-concussion syndrome and seeing most of their symptoms completely resolved within 2-3 weeks. I look forward to conducting a formal study to validate my findings.”
Clinical Associate Professor of Opthamology at USC Roski Eye Institute at Keck School of Medicine
Director of Sports Vision Training and Visual Rehab Center at USC Roski Eye Institute
